Congratulations to Eric Gerhart, of Sheet Metal Workers' Local #33/Vermilion District, the lucky winner of a brand-new Ford F150 pickup truck at the Safety Incentive Program's 10th Annual Awards Luncheon!

The Northeastern Ohio Construction Contractors and Building and Construction Trades Union, recognize the importance of labor-management cooperation.

The leadership of both organizations has formed a unique cooperative effort to begin focusing on mutual problems within the construction industry. The effort, known as the Northeastern Ohio Construction Labor and Management Safety Incentive Program (or more commonly called the Safety Incentive Program), is an important step to address issues jointly that will benefit both the memberships of the participating organizations, workers and community in which it operates.

The purpose of the "Safety Incentive Program" is to encourage union contractors and union craftspersons to be more aware of working safely on the jobsite. Reducing accidents is considered not only good economic sense, but a moral obligation. The "Safety incentive Program" will serve to lower injuries, illnesses and workers' compensation costs. The Building and Construction Trades unions, contractors and employer associations have pledged to cooperate in this effort to reward employees who work safely.

The SIP program is co-sponsored by nine trade associations (including MCA and CPCA) and 30 participating unions principally serving Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga and Lorain counties as well as other counties in northern Ohio. Over 15,000 craftspersons are participating in the program.

The SIP program accepts all eligible construction union craftspersons who have performed at least 80 hours of work per month and 250 hours or work per quarter as participants for the monthly and quarterly safety awards followed by an annual award. These people are eligible for the random drawings to pick the winners from each craft.

The monthly awards include items like sweatshirts, hats and/or golf shirts imprinted with the SIP logo. The quarterly awards, based on the hourly jobsite accident - free records, is a $250 check. The annual grand prize is a new Ford F-150 pickup truck.

Another aspect of the program includes the "SIP TIP", a monthly bulletin developed to alert workers to safety precautions they can take on the job. Thousands of SIP TIPs, bumper stickers, hard hat decals and posters have been distributed and are showing up on job sites through Northeast Ohio.   The previous four months SIP TIPs are posted below.
